what is PGT

PGT stands for Post Graduate Teacher. A PGT is a teacher who is qualified to teach classes from 9th to 12th in secondary and higher secondary schools. PGTs usually specialize in a particular subject, such as Mathematics, Science, History, or English, and hold a postgraduate degree in the relevant subject along with a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree.

Eligibility Criteria:

·       Postgraduate Degree: Candidates must have a postgraduate degree (Master's degree) in the subject they wish to teach.

·       B.Ed. (Bachelor of Education): A professional teaching qualification is mandatory, as it certifies the individual to teach in schools.

·      Subjects:

 ·  Mathematics

 ·  Physics

 ·  Chemistry

 ·  Biology

·  History

·  Geography

·  Political Science

·  English, Hindi, etc.

Recruitment Process:

To become a PGT in government schools, candidates usually need to pass competitive exams such as the State PGT Exams or exams conducted by agencies like Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS), or State Public Service Commissions.

In many states, candidates also appear for the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) or Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET), which are qualifying exams for teaching jobs.

Salary and Career Growth:

·       The salary of PGT teachers in government schools is generally higher than that of TGT (Trained Graduate Teacher) or PRT (Primary Teacher) because of the higher qualifications required.

·       Career progression for PGTs can include promotions to Senior Teacher, Vice Principal, or even Principal based on experience and performance.
